Lichen Grammar
Project type
PhD art project
Location
Vilnius Academy of Art
Date
2020-2024
Lichen Grammar is a visual research, where lichen tell stories – visual and verbal, fictional and real. It is inviting to observe the microscopic yet enormous world of lichen through metaphors, built upon biological references, digital curiosities and imagination that turn to lichen worldview theories. Lichen teach us to trust our metaphors, our descriptive systems, and feelings as a form of knowing.
Guided by visual associations, the artistic becomes the new scientific. Carrying out artistic research from the inside of lichen, being within, sensing, and installing methods of deep observation, makes one unable to unsee the new visual language and knowledge. Lichen teach how to reconnect with the environment, offering new design tools and a novel philosophy.
By observing lichen, new patterns, new rules, and a new grammar emerge. Locally grown (or simulated), site-specific, contextural, digitally crafted, unpredictable symbiotic combinations manifesting in a variety of scales and formats throughout Aistė’s art practice, they offer new stories through image, form, and education.
